When Pilot Officer Herbert Robert Case from Devon had an altercation with the Luftwaffe on 12th October 1940, he crash landed in a field off Winehouse Lane here in Capel and was killed. Farmers carried his body on a farm gate until the RAF picked him up and took the young airman away to be buried.
If anyone can provide more detail on the incident, an email to the webmaster would be appreciated.
